PRE- HISTORIC HERITAGE OF CENTRAL STARA PLANINA

First traces of human presence have come from Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic times, and these are the oldest not only on the Balkan Peninsula but also in Europe. Scientists have dated them back to 50,000 years ago. They have been discovered in the cave of Bacho Kiro by the Dryanovo Monastery and in the nearby Anduka Cave. Three layers of underground galleries present the homes of pre-historic men. Expeditions from Poland, Great Britain and USA have been showing interest to these caves since the beginning of 20th century.

Various items from the Stone and Stone-and-Copper Ages, uncovered during excavations, are to be seen at the Dryanovo Historic Museum and the National Museum of History in Sofia.

The cave of Bacho Kiro has been electrified and is open to tourists daily; it is located at convenient proximity to the road connecting North to South Bulgaria.

Remains from pre-historic life during the Neolithic Age have been also found in the famous Devetashka Cave (Lovech region), as well as the caves in the area of Teteven: Bayovitsa (Cherni Vit village), Grazhdanitsa (Divchovo village), Morovitsa and Draganchovitsa (Glozhene village).

Near the villages of Kravenik and Stolat near Sevlievo, scientists have proven late Neolithic Age as the time when man appeared in the area of Central Stara Planina.

Pre - historic findings from Devetashka and Tabachka Caves near Lovech have proven traces of human presence during the Bronze epoch (3200 - 1200 BC).

The abundance of casual findings - flint and stone tools in the whole region- dates back to Neolithic, Eneolithic and Bronze epochs.
