The town of Sevlievo (about 25 000 inhabitants,
200 m. altitude) is situated in the basin of the Rositsa River.
It was mentioned first under the name of Selvi in
official Turkish document from the middle of XIV century. It probably
originated in X - X² century as a satellite settlement of the medieval
administrative and economic center - the fortress of Hotalich
but it is known not until the XV century.
In its long history Sevlievo lived through periods
of boom and decline. When attacked by the Kurdjalis in 1798 it was robbed
and put to fire and in 1838 a terrible plague kills many of its inhabitants.
The entrepreneurship and diligence of the Sevlievo
people develop the town and bring it to the position of an administrative
center with developed crafts - wood processing, furriery, textile. Furriery
has the greatest part in industrial activity - in mid Õ²Õ century more
than 50 furriery workshops operate in Sevlievo. Their production is
exported all around Europe. Silkworm breeding and silk processing made
Sevlievo famous for they were popular and desired in Austria, France
and Romania.
Schools, a cultural center and churches are built
- the town is living its Renaissance. Prominent Bulgarians teach here:
Petko Slaveykov and Marin Sofroniev, the priest Nencho Nestorov translates
the Gospel into the Bulgarian language.
There are certain sites telling the story of Sevlievo:
the Clock tower, built in 1877-1879 with interesting architecture and
18 meters height; the St. Prophet Ilia church, built in 1834, with a
precious wood-carved iconostasis; the St. Trinity church of 1870.
The town historic museum is housed in the building
of the first non-clerical school (Hadji Stoyan's), built in 1844, with
its two major exhibitions - archaeology and Renaissance (10, Stoletov
Str., working hours: 8.00 to 12.00 and 13,30 to 17,30, tel. 0675/ 327
24). The ethnographic museum exhibitions can be sees in the Dandolov's
houses (6, P.Slaveykov Str., tel. 0675/ 32733).
The stone bridge across the Rositsa River was built
by Kolyo Ficheto in 1857-1858 and was restored after the flood in 1894.
The Monument of Freedom is in the center of the
town (1894), whose pillar is an original stone column from the Roman
town Nikopoluis ad Istrum. The project's authors are Oto Horeishi and
the Italian sculptor Arnoldo Tsoky. The bronze figure was made in Vienna.
The monument was erected on the place of the gallows from which Sevlievo
fighters for Bulgarian freedom start their way to eternity.
It is interesting to visit the Tabahana - a restored
furriery workshop. The open-air museum Hotalich medieval town and
Fortress only 5 km. away to the North - West of Sevlievo is the
most interesting archaeological site in the region. The Hotalich Fortress
- a predecessor of today's town - has existed over 7 centuries - from
the end of X century till the end of XVII century. The revealed city
structure is exhibited containing 4 quarters, two churches and workshops.
The castle has walls well preserved as well as defense towers, entrances,
a small church and some other buildings. The church has been re-sanctified
and church rites can be held in it. There is a relatively well-maintained
road from the town to the site, drinking water and a well-organized
picnic place (for visitors tel. 0675 / 327 24).
Twenty kilometers to the South, on the road to Apriltsi
is the Batoshevo Men's Monastery of Assumption established in
Õ²V century at the time of the Second Bulgarian kingdom; evidence is
the stone writing from the time of Tsar Michail Asen (1246 - 1256).
The monastery was burnt and destroyed to the grounds by a Turkish attack
and restored later in 1836. The woodcarvings in its church are made
by masters from Novo Selo, the icons are painted by the great Renaissance
artist Stanislav Dospevski. In the years of the yoke, the monastery
is a significant center of education. Today it is restored and is an
operating monastery for men. The Vavedenie Bogorodichno (Presentation
of the blessed Virgin) Monastery (Nunnery), created in 17 century
is in the very village of Batoshevo.
In the outskirts of Sevlievo is the monument - mausoleum
of Matey Preobrazhenski - Mitkaloto - a prominent Renaissance enlightener
and fighter for independence (born in Novo Selo - 30 km away from the
town). Ten kilometers far, on the way to Gabrovo, is the Baagdala
Park. It is a natural lime-tree reserve offering wonderful conditions
for recreation.
The village of Sennik, only 7 away from Sevlievo,
is the birthplace of the prominent Bulgarian - winner of a diamond belt
in wrestling Dan Kolov. In the center of the village, near his
birth house - museum is the monument of the great Bulgarian.
About 6 km to the North of Sevlievo is the Alexander
Stamboliyski artificial lake that offers great recreation possibilities,
water-motor sports, fishing and sunbathing. There are recreation centers,
restaurants and villas. One can use the regular buses to the villages
of Gradishte, Gorsko Kosovo and Mladen.
32 kilometers from the town, in the foot of the
mountain is the Lugut locality, famous for many years for the Rositsa
game-breeding station and for the herds of boars, deers and the
wonderful exemplars of royal stag. The locality is one of the few natural
places where brown bear lives. The station offers hunting trophies,
photo safari and riding of elite horses.
Lugut is a convenient starting point to the mountain
and the peaks Mazalat and Botev. Nearby is the village of Stokite
with one of the entrances to the Central Balkan National Park.
To the South, 8 km. from the town is one of the
best motor polygons in the world - "Gorna Rositsa". Every year, rounds
of European and world championships in all motor-cross classes are held
here.
