The town of Troyan (26 541 inhabitants, 400
m. altitude) is situated in the Northern foot of the Troyan Balkan,
along the two banks of the Beli Osam River.
The name of the town comes from the ancient Roman
road Via Trayana that crossed the Balkan mountain and connected
Myzia with Thrace and the Aegean Sea. The settlement originates from
the beginning of the XV century after Bulgaria falls under the Ottoman
yoke. Some refugees were looking for the protection of the mountain
and they settled in this area hard to reach.
The settlement is growing up fast, but in 1800,
it is attacked and devastated by kurdjalis. Its diligent people build
it up again, crafts are developed, especially pottery and woodcarving,
and in XIX century, they enjoy industrial and cultural bloom.
The spiritual awakening during the Bulgarian Renaissance
creates wonderful pieces of church architecture, icon painting and woodcarving
- the St. Parashkeva Church (1835), the Assumption Church
in the Troyan Monastery. The carved iconostasis in St. Nikolay Letni
Church in the village of Gumostnik is a unique piece of art.
The mountaineers, thirsty for knowledge, build cultural
centers and schools. In 1872 in the newly - built Yellow School, non-clerical
education is introduced also in French language.
During the Liberating War (1877/ 78) Troyan was
devastated by the Bashibazouk. After the Liberation it raises up from
the ashes again. In 1911, the first electric bulb is lit and Troyan
is the third town in Bulgaria using electricity, after Sofia and Plovdiv.
